Creating a new feature for an existing app — Duolingo

Increasing user engagement with a live-stream feature

Client: Duolingo

My role: Research, UX, UI Design, Design System, Prototyping

Introduction

Duolingo is a functional app where users learn different languages on their own. While Duolingo excels at vocabulary and grammar acquisition, many learners struggle to develop speaking confidence because they lack opportunities for authentic conversations with native speakers.

Creative direction

Problem

Duolingo offers great strategies to tackle challenges through grammar but doesn't offer practical services with real people, which would help a lot in the learning process.

Goal

Adding a new feature to Duolingo that connects users and allows them to practice a language through conversational groups

Research

Research

We conducted a competitive analysis of the leading language learning apps to understand which features they offer, what works well for users, and which opportunities remain unexplored. This research helped us identify best practices and uncover gaps that could inspire a more engaging learning experience.

Key findings

Many users believe they could improve their language skills faster through group interactions with native speakers. Community-based learning and live conversations emerged as key factors for engagement and language confidence.

Based on these insights, we explored how streaming could become a valuable learning tool. Rather than offering pre-recorded lessons alone, our goal was to create a live streaming feature where native speakers can interact with learners in real time. By combining authentic conversations with an immersive streaming experience, we aimed to help users build confidence, improve their listening and speaking skills, and learn languages in a more natural and engaging way.

Users can now practice their target language with native speakers and participate in live streaming sessions with learners from around the world, fostering cultural immersion, improving conversational skills, and creating a more engaging and interactive learning experience.

Design challenge

Many learners feel anxious when speaking with native speakers, creating a barrier to participation and language practice.

Solution

Live streaming was introduced as a low-pressure environment where learners can observe, interact, and gradually build confidence before engaging directly with native speakers.
