Making language learning more social and engaging

I explored a new live conversation experience for Duolingo, designed to help learners practice speaking with native speakers and other learners in a more engaging, low-pressure environment.

Duolingo is highly effective for building foundational language skills, but practicing real conversations remains a challenge for many learners.

The Goal

Create a social learning experience that gives Duolingo users more opportunities to practice speaking in real time, while making the experience feel approachable, engaging, and easy to join.

Research

To understand how learners currently practice speaking and where existing language-learning products fall short, I looked at both user needs and competing experiences.

Key findings

01 — Speaking requires practice

Grammar and vocabulary alone don't necessarily build confidence in real-world conversations.

02 — Social interaction can feel intimidating

Learners may hesitate to speak with strangers, especially when they are still building confidence.

03 — Existing experiences are fragmented

Learners often need to leave their primary learning platform to find opportunities for live conversation.

Wireframe

High fidelity

Users can now practice their target language with native speakers and participate in live streaming sessions with learners from around the world, fostering cultural immersion, improving conversational skills, and creating a more engaging and interactive learning experience.

Design challenge

Many learners feel anxious when speaking with native speakers, creating a barrier to participation and language practice.

Solution

Live streaming was introduced as a low-pressure environment where learners can observe, interact, and gradually build confidence before engaging directly with native speakers.
